Women have contributed enormously to world aviation and not least from Ireland.

A country girl, Sophie Pierce from Newcastle West in Limerick was the first woman
to fly solo from CapeTown,to London in 1927-28 and was holder of the world altitude record
in an open cockpit, reaching heights in excess of 20,000 ft. She became Lady Heath,
or Lady Icarus as she was also known,
whose world exploits in aviation rate amongst the greatest.
